Field Trips: Field Trip - Semipalmated sandpipers
Thursday, June 29, 2006 - 11:01 PM

Club Activities WHAT: Bird migration stopover in Bay of Fundy
WHERE: observation deck @ Johnson's Mill (southeast of Dorchester)
WHEN: Sat. Aug. 12, 2006
Leave Fredericton @ 8:00 am from Tim Horton's Frex --return Approx. 7 pm
WHY: to observe and photograph shorebirds in flight, at roost (just prior to high tide) and netting of birds for banding proposes.
Each year from mid July to mid August, semipalmated sandpipers (along with a few other species of shorebirds) begin a southern migration, stopping over in the Bay of Fundy to feed on mud shrimp for needed energy for a 3 - 4 day non-stop flight to Surinan, Brazil, South America.
The females arrive first followed (approx. 10 days later) by the males and fledgling chicks. They tend to gather and roost prior to high tide. The birds follow the receding tide while gorging on mud shrimp, for approz. 10 days (doubling their weight).
Birds can be seen in various locations in the Bay of Fundy (Mary's Point, Hopewell Rocks, Minas Basin, Johnson's Mill).
Johnson's Mill (southeastof Dorchester) was chosen because of the observation deck where we can observe birds in flight, roosting just prior to high tide and watch the netting of birds to be banded.
High tide on the 12th will be at 2:45 pm. The Fish and Wildlife people who band the birds suggest we be at the observation deck by 1:00 pm approx. in order to observe and protograph the birds in flight, landing to roost and netting of birds. Flocks of birds (15,000 to 50,000) can be seen in flight prior to landing and roosting prior to high tide.

I suggest we meet at Tim Horton's (Frex grounds) and leave no later than 8:00 am. We will proceed to Salisbury for a pitstop @ Tim Horton's then on to Sackville. I suggest a visit to Fish and Wildlife building. We have a choice for lunch: McDonald's, Bordens, Marshlands Inn, Mel's Tea Room. We will then proceed to Dorchester to see the statue of the world's largest sandpiper and then to the observation deck at Johnson's Mill for approx. 1:00 pm.

For equipment I suggest 100 - 500 focal length lens, tripod, raincoat.

There is a possibility of peregrine falcons in the area. If so -- we may not see as many birds as falcons dine on sandpipers.

Will likely return home via Memramcook to pick up the TCH. We will stop at the Salisbury Big Stop/Tim Horton's.

MORE INFO, QUESTIONS: Contact Bob and/or Gladys Clarke at 454-3243.

A GREAT NEW FEATURE HAS BEEN ADDED:

If you are interested in staying in Dorchester over Saturday night and exploring in the area on Sunday, Maurice Henri has kindly offered to lead any interested members. Please contact Michiko Michiko@unb.ca by August 4th for all the details.

Field Trips: Field Trip to Ministers Island Sat. Sept. 24, 2005
Saturday, September 10, 2005 - 07:42 PM

Club Activities Ministers Island in Passamaquoddy Bay near St. Andrews is a Provincial Historic Site on which Sir William Van Horne, builder of the transcontinental railway, built a grand estate in the 1890's. There is a large sandstone house, a circular stone bathhouse near the shore, a windmill, a huge livestock barn and a 1790 stone house which was the residence of a loyalist Anglican minister, Samuel Andrews. These, among other interesting sites, are all spread out over a large area, and provide an opportunity for all manner of photography. Their website may be found at: www.ministersisland.org

The island is only accessible at low tide and two guided tours of 2 hours duration are provided on most days from May to October; one from 2 hrs. before low tide and one during the 2 hrs. following low tide. I have obtained permission for Photo Fredericton club members to be allowed on the island for the whole 4 hour period surrounding low tide on Saturday, Sept. 24 (which is about 11:30 AM), at a cost of $5 per person. We would have to meet at the end of the Bar Road in St. Andrews about 8:45 AM which would mean having to leave Fredericton about 7 AM. (At least we will have some morning light while there!)

The cost of $5 is the standard fee for the tour. We will go onto the island in our own cars/vans and be given a tour of the premises, and will be mainly free to do our own thing photographically. We would leave about 1 PM which will allow lots of time for lunch and getting back to Fredericton- perhaps there will be some colorful blueberry fields along the way!

Following our Sept. 13 PF meeting I will collect the names of those wishing to participate to provide details, and perhaps shared transportation can be arranged.
