       2023-24 Competitions 

  1- October 24, Black and White Photography. 

Scope of Competition

For this year, we changed this competition from a monochrome to a traditional black & white.
As a reminder, a black & white image ranges from very dark gray (black) to very light grey (white) with varying shades (darker) and tints (light) of the grayscale.
Based on the above, all submitted must be deemed as a black and white image.
This completion and its themes are aimed at providing photographers with the opportunity to exercise their creative skills to: capture outstanding and stunning images in areas that they may be out of their comfort zones.
Image submitted into this competition can be staged or candid.

For the purpose of this competition, the entrant will submit their image into one of the following four themes:

 Architecture – image(s) should be of a human-made structure (mobile, free-standing, or outdoor). Image can be taken from inside or outside the structure. This theme includes both rural and urban settings.

 Dilapidated – image(s) of abandoned aircraft, boats, buildings, ships, structures, trains and vehicles.

 Landscape – image(s) of subjects such as weather phenomena, geological formations, cityscape, landscapes, seascapes and natural phenomena such as planets, stars and astronomical events.

 Person(s) – image(s) can be traditional or casual portraits, and could incorporate the environment and/or workspaces of the individual(s). More dramatic images with high and low key images are also permitted. In capturing images for this theme, all photographers must endeavor to apply the principle of: “Treating all subjects with respect and dignity. Give special consideration to vulnerable subjects and compassion to victims of crime or tragedy. Intrude on private moments of grief only when the public has an overriding and justifiable need to see.”

              2- November 28, Music Theme

Scope of Competition

This completion and its themes are aimed at providing photographers with the opportunity to exercise their creative skills to: capture outstanding and stunning images in areas that they may be out of their comfort zones.
Image submitted into this competition can be staged or candid.

Themes:

 Creative musical image can be abstract, expressionist or altered reality. Image can include: musical notes, lines (staff), musical instrument(s), musician(s), person(s), etc… Query Google Music Art images for some inspirational ideas.

 Musical instruments – image of musical instrument(s). Query Google Music Photography images for some inspirational ideas.

 Musical performers – musician(s) which includes: orchestra, band, singers, choir, marching band, etc… Query Google Music Performance Photograph images for some inspirational ideas.

 Performing to music – includes: all forms of dancing and/or movement to music such as: street dancing, dance performance, ballet, exercise class, musical production, etc… Image can contain one or more persons. Query Google Music performance photograph images for inspirational ideas.

In capturing images for this competition, all photographers must endeavour to comply with the principle of:
“Treating all subjects with respect and dignity. Give special consideration to vulnerable subjects and compassion to victims of crime or tragedy. Intruding on private moments of grief only when the public has an overriding and justifiable need to see”.

You are encouraged to submit your images which exemplify I thought I closed all these already, `the unique beauty of one or more themes from your perspective as either a resident or a visitor.

          3- January 23, Hometown Proud.

Scope of Competition:

This completion and its themes are aimed at providing photographers with the opportunity to exercise their creative skills using captured images of their hometown of Fredericton, All photos should be taken around the City of Fredericton and surrounding 15 KM area. All photos should be your interpretation of “Hometown Proud” reflecting the daily life, landmarks, nature and/or history of our city. Capture outstanding and stunning images in areas that may be out of their comfort zones. These images may be taken in color, Monochrome or infrared.

Themes:

•  Landscape – images can include natural landscape, urban landscape that are identifiable 7to the Fredericton area. Hand of man is permitted.
  
  
  
• Man-made Structures/Objects– images of any man-made object, buildings, transportation, still life, rural and city landscapes. Images may contain the hand of man.

• Person(s) – image(s) can be environmental or on location portraits and should incorporate familiar landmarks of the City of Fredericton.

            4- February 27, Color Theme                                
Scope of Competition:

This completion and its themes are aimed at providing photographers with the opportunity to exercise their creative skills using colour to: capture outstanding and stunning images in areas that they may be out of their comfort zones. Therefore, monochrome and infrared images cannot be submitted into this competition.

Themes:

 Landscape – images can include natural landscape, urban landscape and seascapes. Hand of man is permitted.

 Man-made Structures/Objects– images of any man-made object, buildings, transportation (air, land, sea or space), still life, rural and city landscapes. Images may contain the hand of man.

 Nature/Wildlife – image(s) of subjects such as amphibians, flowers, insects, marine-life, reptiles, wild or domesticated animals or birds, etc. This category also includes botanical, insect, subjects. Domesticated animals and birds are permitted in this theme. Hand-of-man elements contained within the image is also permitted.

 Person(s) – image(s) can be traditional or casual portraits, and could incorporate the environment and/or workspaces of the individual(s).

    5- March 26, Close-Up/Macro Photography.

Scope of Competition

For this competition, the focus is on the principle of extreme magnification in capturing items or elements not normally viewed.

Open Theme – image can be fish, insect, mammal, reptile, plant, vegetable, fruit, flowers, water drops, spider webs, money, object, etc…

Both detailed and accurate representation of a subject and creative interpretation and impression through selective focus, etc… are acceptable.

The terms ‘close-up’ and ‘macro’ are often used to describe the same type of magnification of an image. However technically speaking, a ‘close-up’ is an image with a reproduction ratio ranging from 1:10 to just below life size. Whereas ‘macro’ is life size (1:1) to 10:1 life size.

Close-up photography covers a broader range of lens options and techniques to achieve maximum magnification. The key emphasis of this competition is to “filling the frame is paramount” without the requirement of cropping the image in post processing. Therefore, appropriate composition is required at the time of image capture.

For this competition, you can use a dedicated macro prime lens, zoom lens, or a regular lens using a diopter, extension tubes, bellows, close up filters, lens extender or reverse lens. A combination of these devices are also permitted.

       6- April 23, Travel Photograph

Scope of Competition:

This competition comprises images taking on your traveling adventures, image can be from anywhere in the world, the image should be identifiable to the place you are trying to showcase,

• Landscape
• Cityscape
• Seascape
• Wildlife
• People

The photographer should try to depict the culture, history or iconic locations they have traveled to as if they were promoting the area for tourism.
